FAQ

Please read first:  This FAQ is a practical guide to common questions. The official WKU admissions website and the latest published admission notice always take precedence over this document. Requirements may change from one application cycle to another.

 

A. About WKU

1. What is Wenzhou-Kean University?

Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU) is a China-U.S. cooperative university in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. Undergraduate courses are taught in English by internationally recruited faculty. Eligible students receive bachelor's degrees awarded by both Chinese and U.S. authorities. Students may also have the opportunity to participate in exchange at the U.S. campus for 1 to 5 semesters.

2. Are undergraduate programs taught in English?

Yes. WKU's undergraduate programs are delivered in English.

3. Does WKU offer Chinese-taught undergraduate programs?

WKU does not offer independent Chinese-language bachelor's programs for international students. International students are required to complete certain credits related to Chinese language and Chinese culture as part of graduation requirements.

B. Eligibility & Application

5. Who can apply as an international undergraduate student?

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport and must meet the current high school graduation, nationality, and other eligibility requirements published by WKU.

6. I have not graduated from high school yet. Can I apply?

Yes, where permitted by the current admission policy, applicants who have not yet graduated may provide a pre-graduation certificate stating the expected graduation date. You must obtain your final high school diploma before enrollment.

7. What documents do I need?

You should prepare your current valid passport identification page, color ID photo, academic transcript, proof of graduation, personal essay, non-criminal record, and any optional standardized test scores you choose to submit. Applicants with special circumstances, such as transfer applicants or Architecture/Design applicants, may have additional requirements.

8. What if my documents are not in English?

All documents that are not originally in English must be accompanied by certified English translations.

9. Can I submit only some documents now and the rest later?

Please submit your application only after all required materials are ready. WKU conducts a comprehensive and holistic review and does not provide a preliminary assessment based on partial materials.

10. Can Admissions pre-check my eligibility before I apply?

WKU does not conduct individual pre-reviews based on partial or unofficial materials. Please review the official requirements and submit a complete application for formal evaluation.

 

C. English Proficiency

11. What are the minimum English-test scores?

For non-native English applicants, the current minimums are TOEFL 79 iBT (or 550 PBT or new iBT 4.0), IELTS 6.0, or Duolingo English Test 105. Please check the official website for the latest testing and scoring policy.

12. Can I request an English-proficiency waiver?

Some applicants may qualify for a waiver based on English-medium secondary education or other published criteria. You must provide official supporting documentation, and all waiver requests are subject to final approval by the Admissions Office. Applicants to fully-online programs are not eligible for English-proficiency waivers.

13. I went to an English-medium high school. What should I submit?

Please ask your school to issue an official certificate confirming that English was the medium of instruction, then follow the waiver submission instructions in the application process.

14. Can I apply first and send my English score later?

Please submit your application once all required materials, including the applicable English-proficiency report, are ready. WKU reviews complete applications holistically.

 

D. Standardized Tests

15. Are SAT or ACT scores required?

For the 2027 application cycle, WKU has adopted a test-optional policy for the listed national or international examinations. You may choose whether to submit eligible SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, IB, or UEC results.

16. Which tests can I submit?

The current list includes SAT, ACT, GCE A-Level, AP, IB, and UEC. Please refer to the official International Admissions page for exact reporting requirements and any cycle-specific updates.

17. I want to submit SAT scores. What code should I use?

Please use Kean University's CEEB code 2517 when sending SAT scores.

18. Can I submit predicted A-Level or IB results?

For the current cycle, predicted results may be accepted for examinations such as A-Level or IB when final results are not yet available, subject to the published rules. Final results must be submitted when they become available.

 

E. Scholarships

19. What freshman scholarships are available?

The current international freshman scholarships include First-Class Scholarship (60% reduction of annual tuition) and Second-Class Scholarship (30% reduction of annual tuition). Renewal is subject to the annual renewal requirements.

20. Do I need a separate scholarship application?

No separate scholarship application is required under the current process. In the application system, indicate that you wish to be considered for a scholarship and select the applicable qualification category.

21. What scores can qualify me for a scholarship?

Published qualification categories include high school GPA, SAT, ACT, AP, A-Level, IB, UEC, and English-proficiency scores. For example, First-Class Scholarship benchmarks include high school GPA ≥ 3.5/4.0, SAT ≥ 1300 (Reading + Math), ACT ≥ 27, IB ≥ 32, IELTS 7.0, or Duolingo 130. Second-Class benchmarks include high school GPA ≥ 3.0/4.0, SAT ≥ 1250, ACT ≥ 25, IB ≥ 30, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo 120. Please use the official scholarship page for the complete current table.

22. I want to use my high school GPA for scholarship eligibility. Do I need an evaluation?

Yes. Applicants using high school GPA for scholarship consideration must provide a NACES-evaluated high school transcript, unless the credential falls under the current U.S.-education exemption.

23. Can applicants from English-speaking countries use IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo for scholarship qualification?

No. Applicants from countries where English is an official language are not eligible to apply for scholarships based on English-proficiency test scores.

24. Does meeting the scholarship score guarantee a scholarship?

No. Meeting a published benchmark makes you eligible to be considered. The university conducts its own admission and scholarship review, and a benchmark does not guarantee an award.

25. Can transfer students receive the freshman scholarship?

International transfer students are not eligible for freshman scholarships at the time of admission. Other scholarships or grants may be available after enrollment, subject to the applicable policies.

 

F. Architecture & Design

26. Do Architecture and Design majors require a portfolio?

Yes. Applicants to Architecture and Design programs must submit a portfolio and the required major application materials.

27. How do I submit my portfolio?

Email your personal portfolio and major application materials to mgc@wku.edu.cn, with a copy to globaladmissions@wku.edu.cn. Use the subject format: WKU + [Applied Major Name] + [Full Name].

28. How many works should be in the portfolio?

The current guideline requires a minimum of 10 and no more than 12 individual creative works, with the portfolio demonstrating creative thinking, visualization, technical ability, creativity, range, and presentation.

29. Can Admissions pre-review my portfolio before I submit the full application?

No. WKU does not conduct early individual portfolio reviews before the full application is received.

 

G. Tuition, Fees & Housing

30. What are the current undergraduate tuition and fees?

For the 2027 academic year, the annual tuition is RMB 88,000. Accommodation is RMB 8,000–10,000 per academic year, and insurance is RMB 800. The one-time application fee is RMB 400 and the deposit is RMB 20,000.

31. Is the deposit refundable?

The deposit is non-refundable and will be applied to tuition upon enrollment.

32. Do scholarship students still pay the application fee and deposit?

Yes. The application fee and deposit are required of all students, including scholarship recipients.

33. What are the dormitory options?

WKU offers a range of residence-hall configurations, including double-occupancy rooms, single-bedroom options, and suites with private or shared bathroom facilities. Common amenities include 24-hour security, hot water, Wi-Fi, laundry rooms, kitchens, and recreational areas. Water and electricity are charged separately.

 

H. Deadlines & Future Intakes

34. When was the Fall 2027 deadline?

The Fall 2027 application deadline was June 15, 2027. The Fall 2026 application cycle has now closed.

35. When will Fall 2027 applications open?

The Fall 2027 opening date should be confirmed through the official WKU admissions website once the university publishes the relevant notice. Please prepare your documents in advance and check the website regularly for the latest schedule and requirements.

36. Can the university accept a late application?

Please apply by the published deadline. WKU does not normally accept late applications once a published application cycle has closed unless an official notice states otherwise.
